Too Good to be Threw Thrift Store

In keeping with our mission and in order to meet the growing needs of women, children and families in our community, the Comox Valley Transition Society opened a social enterprise thrift store in 2008.

Revenue generated by the Too Good To Be Threw Thrift Store contributes to supporting and sustaining current and future CVTS programs and services. The store also provides clothing and household goods at no cost to women, children and families in need.

The thrift store has become a valued and much-loved shopping destination in the community and brings visitors from across the Comox Valley and beyond.

Smoke is seen billowing from the original Too Good To Be Threw thrift shop on January 20, 2019. Fire crews were unable to salvage the store or its contents.

The original thrift store was located on 6th Street in Courtenay, just a few doors down from the CVTS office building. On January 20, 2019, a fire broke out overnight on the loading dock at the back of the store, which soon engulfed the entire store. The store – and all of its’ contents – was destroyed.

Thanks to an overwhelming outpouring of support from the community – and a lot of elbow grease from many volunteers, in particular the Comox Rotary – we soon found a temporary location in which we could open up and begin operations again. The space in the new Puntledge Road location is much smaller than the original store, and within a month of the Puntledge Road store opening, we were fortunate to open a second temporary location on 5th Street.

CVTS staff are both grateful and humbled by the community support we received during this extremely difficult time. While we continue to feel the financial impact of the loss of the original thrift store – and the subsequent closure during the coronavirus pandemic – we are thankful to have been able to keep going, and look forward to rebuilding in the original location. Plans are in the works, and we will provide updates as information comes available.

As part of our fundraising efforts, CVTS hosts a monthly 50/50 raffle at the Too Good To Be Threw thrift Store. Tickets are available at both stores for $2 each and we hold the draw on the last day of each month at the end of the business day at the Puntledge Road store. Prizes have ranged from $200+ to over $1,000! Learn more about raffle rules and regulations.
