Housing & Homelessness Prevention

With more than 30 years experience of supporting women and their children who have experienced violence in their homes and in their lives, CVTS is acutely aware of the need for safe, affordable, appropriate and supportive housing to give women a realistic chance to stabilize, heal and move forward towards self-sufficiency with strength and self-determination. In fact, housing has become a fundamental focus of our work, and our goal is to create 125 new affordable housing units by 2025.

CVTS offers support to women, children and families who are presently or are at risk of being unhoused. Housing workers assist individuals to access resources, to develop skills, and provide practical supports that can help them obtain and maintain safe housing.

CVTS also operates 23 units of provincially subsidized housing, and administers rental supplements making housing affordable for women, children and families who are tenants of those units. Housing units are available by referral only.

Dawn to Dawn Action On Homelessness Society and the Comox Valley Transition Society have partnered to build and manage a Cumberland development project that will include 23 units of affordable housing for families. Learn more about g̱wax̱’dzi dsas: Tall Tree Place

What we do:

Emotional & Practical Supports

CVTS Homelessness Outreach and Tenant Support Workers work directly with women, asssessing their needs and risks, and providing emotional support to assist women in resolving problems, identifying and setting goals for themselves, and creating individual support, action, safety,  or wellness plans. Staff also assist women in developing household management skills, (e.g. budgeting, etc.).

Assessments & Referrals

CVTS staff provide information and referrals to other community/federal/provincial services and resources available, such as housing, income assistance, legal support, counselling, education, employment, drug and alcohol treatment treatment and recovery, health services, etc. Where possible, staff will transport and accompany individuals to appointments. 

Liaison & Advocacy

Staff proactively advocate on behalf of their clients, liaising with other community service providers to promote the interests of the women, children and families they work with. Staff also liaise with provincial bodies to negotiate supports for clients who are currently or at risk of being unsheltered.
