Women and Homelessness
As homelessness is a serious problem for an increasing number of our clients, the Comox Valley Transition Society, along with other local agencies, participated in a homeless survey in November 2006. We believe the results are significant. An interesting outcome of the survey was the information that an unusually high number of those who are homeless in the Comox Valley are women.
In response to the growing problem of homelessness among women, we began a weekly Women’s Drop-in program in July 2007, where women can access a nutritious meal, street nursing, legal information, an income tax service, support, referrals and access to clothing and household goods. Many women are currently attending each week, with up to 102 women in attendance at special events such as our annual Christmas party.
A representative of our agency (Anne Davis) currently serves on the Regional District Task Force on Housing and Homelessness, which has identified housing for women leaving abusive relationships as a high priority for the Comox Valley. It is our desire, as an agency, to participate in the development of such housing.
