Peace Begins At Home
Peace begins at home…it’s an idea that many of us hold dear. But for many women, children, elders and families in our communitt, this is not the case. For too many, home is not a place of safety, security and sanctuary; instead, it is a place where family members or intimate partners use violence and coercion to maintain power and control.
That’s why CVTS and a host of community partners come together annually for the Peace Begins at Home Purple Ribbon Campaign. For two weeks in April, CVTS works to educate the community about the continued issue of domestic violence, encouraging people to wear purple ribbons and do their part to help end family violence.

Peace Begins At Home has come to be known as the “Purple Ribbon Campaign”. We are so pleased to partner with local government, community organizations and individuals who are committed to raising awareness about family violence and violence against women in our community. Everyone deserves to live a life free of violence, and we encourage people to join us in our efforts to create a safer place for women, children and families in the Comox Valley by spreading the word and wearing a purple ribbon.
The Facts About Violence Against Women
Half of all women in Canada have experience at least one incident of physical or sexual violence since the age of 16.
Approximately every six days a women in Canada is killed by her intimate partner. Out of 83 police-reported intimate partner homicides in 2014, 67 of the victims (more than 80%) were women.
On any given night in Canada, 3,491 women and their 2,724 children sleep in shelters because it isn’t safe at home.
On any given night, about 300 women and children are turned away because shelters are already full.
Indigenous women are killed at 6 times the rate of non-Indigenous women.
Women are at greater risk of experiencing elder abuse from a family member, accounting for 60% of senior survivors of family violence.

- Teach your children self-esteem and self-worth.
- Create a peaceful and safe environment in my home and community.
